Independent research concludes 23% reduction in burnout and 49% increase in identified diagnoses

New York, NY – January 17, 2023 – Navina, the artificial intelligence (AI)-powered primary care platform that transforms complex, fragmented patient data into actionable insights at the point of care, today announced that the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) released its report describing physician perspectives on using Navina. The AAFP interviewed family physicians using Navina’s AI clinical assistant to better understand how this technology can reduce administrative burden and support value-based care. Their findings support that when AI is applied to clinical review processes, it can contribute to significant improvements in clinical efficiency, physician satisfaction and confidence, and value-based outcomes.

Physician burnout is on the rise as a result of the growing volume of fragmented patient data and the stringent requirements for risk adjustment in value-based payment models. According to a recent Medscape report, 51% of physicians reported burnout in 2022. This evaluation of Navina’s AI Assistant from the family physician perspective indicated a significant reduction in burnout, with a reported 38% reduction in visit preparation time, 23% reduction in burnout, and a 22% increase in overall practice satisfaction. In addition, 98% of the physicians surveyed reported that Navina helps them capture diagnoses more accurately. 84% of Navina’s AI-powered diagnosis recommendations were accepted, with a 49% increase of diagnoses found.

"We’ve concluded that an AI Assistant is an important innovation for primary care physicians to streamline their clinical workflow and thrive in value-based care," said Steven E. Waldren, MD, MS, Chief Medical Informatics Officer at the AAFP. "This second study with Navina across a broader cohort of physicians and practices further validates the AAFP's initial findings that AI has the potential to dramatically relieve physician burnout when it is properly integrated into their workflow and provides evidence-based insights that clinicians can trust.”

Navina’s AI Assistant reviews the entire patient chart, including lab reports, consult notes and scanned documents, and surfaces the most relevant information in the form of a concise patient summary and actionable insights at the point of care. It provides clinicians with a complete and accurate picture of patients’ health status, allowing them to prepare for visits more efficiently, accurately capture diagnoses based on data buried deep within the records, and spend more time doing what they are trained to do – counseling and treating patients.

“The results of the AAFP’s independent evaluation of Navina, involving family physicians using this tool in practice, underscores our commitment to putting the physician at the center of everything we do,” said Ronen Lavi, Co-Founder and CEO of Navina. “The high acceptance rate of our AI-driven suggestions – as seen in the study and validated across our entire customer base of over 5,000 users – demonstrates the level of trust our physician-first AI platform has earned. I am very encouraged to see how AI is making such a huge impact on physician well-being and patient care, while helping clinicians navigate the complex landscape of value-based care efficiently and successfully.”

The evaluation further demonstrated a 45% increase in physician confidence and preparedness for patient visits with the AI Assistant supporting their clinical decision-making at the point of care.

"Three years ago, I spent countless hours searching for documents, lab and imaging results, and with Navina, this is a thing of the past. I know my patients better, and I am prepared when I see them for their visit,” one physician shared in the survey.

About American Academy of Family Physicians

Founded in 1947, the AAFP represents 129,600 physicians and medical students nationwide. It is the largest medical society devoted solely to primary care. Family physicians conduct approximately one in five office visits -- that’s 192 million visits annually or 48 percent more than the next most visited medical specialty. Today, family physicians provide more care for America’s underserved and rural populations than any other medical specialty. Family medicine’s cornerstone is an ongoing, personal patient-physician relationship focused on integrated care.
